Expelled: No Darwin Allowed

April 14, 2010 by Brandon | 3 Comments

At least the Catholics have one thing going for them, and that’s their acceptance of evolution. As one theology professor has learned, it’s pretty dangerous for you to openly admit to accepting evolution in some theology schools of “higher learning.”

Florida’s Reformed Theological Seminary has kicked professor Bruce K. Waltke out after a video blog of his surfaced. In the video, Waltke allegedly states that Christianity’s continued denial of evolution will “make [them] a cult.”

A pretty bold statement from a professor at a seminary with an explicit mandate on never mentioning evolution.

What I find so amusing about this is the blatant hypocrisy on display here. The religious right is bent on “teaching the controversy” in our public schools, that is, injecting intelligent design into biology classes so that students can have “both sides” of the argument. Yet when it comes to their schools, they’ll force a professor out for his private thoughts on the matter outside of the classroom.

I wonder what Ben Stein has to say about this. Perhaps he should make another documentary about religious schools not teaching evolution and firing professors who discuss the subject, because after all, the purpose of his film was simply to demonstrate the unfairness and bias in the education system. Right? Yeah, right.

Think Or Be Damned

October 12, 2009 by Brandon | 3 Comments

I came across a site that has a bunch of political cartoons dating back to the 1860’s through the turn of the century that discuss evolution.

A specific cartoon amazed me because it seems as though it could have been produced today rather than in 1899.

In the picture, men of science waving a flag reading “THINK OR BE DAMNED” aim a gatling gun titled “Enlightenment” toward a mob of pasters, priests, monks, and other religious folk, who are armed with primitive, dark age weapons and carry a flag reading “BELIEVE OR BE DAMNED.”

The barrels of the gun are individually named “History,” “Archaeology,” “Evolution,” and “Geology,” while the boxes of ammunition lying around are labled “Historical Facts,” “Scientific Facts,” and “Rational Religion.”

The religious mob ignorantly charges forward, but ultimately they’ll be mowed down by scientific progress. They don’t even stand a chance.

Again, this is a cartoon that was made back in 1899 and was depicting a battle between science and religion then, where scientists were killing superstition with the most devastating weapon of the day, yet we have people trying to tell us that this conflict is new.

Anyway, I thought it was amusing so I figured I’d share it.

What Have We Here?

Why… it’s a 5 million year old whale fossil.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, young earth creationists.

One Step Closer to Creating Life

January 13, 2009 by Brandon | 1 Comment

Scientists were amazed to find that they’ve created self-replicating RNA, which is considered to be the ancestor of DNA.

Even more exciting is that this “immortal” RNA, which will continue to replicate indefinately in the lab, seems to be creating “species,” so to speak. They evolve and compete against each other when they are introduced with other compounds; the RNA actually incorporates the other compounds to create an entirely new, self-replicating compound.

While this isn’t necessarily life, what it could be is a window into where Darwinian evolutionary theory actually begins. Long have theists confused the theory of evolution with the origins of life. All evolutionary theory does is explain how life changes after it already exists. However, we now have a non-living compound that seems to exhibit the ability to evolve in the same fashion that life does, and perhaps, this is where life actually did come from.

What isn’t explained is how this article found a place on Fox News.

Spore

September 11, 2008 by Brandon | Leave a Comment

A biology lesson on evolution Spore is not, but it is still a pretty fantastic game.

I’m amused by their decision to start your little cell in the “primordial soup” by means of transpermia rather than worrying about angering the religious nuts with abiogenesis. Because, you know, it’s not like they’re cool with evolution anyway.

I’m sort of disappointed that the beginning stages of the game aren’t are complex as the final stage. I suppose it makes mild sense, but the stage I was actually most excited about, the cell stage, is the shortest and least involved stage there is. To say it’s easy would be an understatment. It’s hardly worth playing that stage because of the limitations you have.

I ended up downloading the Spore Origins game for my iPod Touch, which focuses exclusively on this stage. I don’t know why they didn’t base the cell stage of the PC game off this; it’s much more entertaining, although still very simple.

All in all though, a fun game that I think is worth mentioning given the subject matter!

What is Fractal Wrongness?

The state of being wrong at every conceivable scale of resolution. That is, from a distance, a fractally wrong person's worldview is incorrect; and furthermore, if you zoom in on any small part of that person's worldview, that part is just as wrong as the whole worldview.
